How to Fill a Sandbag Correctly

Filling a sandbag correctly takes less than two minutes. Follow these five steps for a tight, secure bag every time.

• Step 1: Open the bag and hold the hem at the top.

• Step 2: Slide the bag over a shovel or scoop facing downward.

• Step 3: Fill the bag with sand or gravel to 40–50 lbs.

• Step 4: Shake the bag gently to settle the fill material.

• Step 5: Tie the top string tight. The bag is ready to stack.

Do not overfill. A half-to-two-thirds filled bag stacks and seals better. Stack bags in a staggered brick pattern for the strongest barrier.

What Are Unfilled Sandbags Used For?

Empty sandbags cover four main use cases on job sites across Texas.

FAQs

FAQs about our Unfilled Sandbags

1. What are unfilled sandbags used for?

Unfilled sandbags (empty sandbags) are used for flood protection, erosion control, traffic management, and construction projects. Buy them empty and fill them on-site with sand, gravel, or soil. They are a cost-effective, flexible solution for any project that needs a sandbag barrier.

2. What material are these sandbags made of?

Our unfilled sandbags are made from woven polypropylene — a heavy-duty, weather-resistant fabric. The weave is tight and strong enough for flood barriers and construction site use. The material holds up through repeated filling, emptying, and re-use with proper care.

3. Can these sandbags be reused?

Yes. With proper care and handling, unfilled sandbags can be reused across multiple projects. Empty the bag after use, inspect the seams and closure, and store it dry. Replace any bag with visible tears or weak seams before the next fill.

4. How much sand is required to fill each bag?

Each unfilled sandbag holds 40–50 lbs of fill material when loaded. Sand, gravel, and soil are all suitable fill options. Avoid overfilling — a bag filled to 60–70% of capacity stacks better and seals more securely than a fully packed bag.

5. Are these sandbags suitable for outdoor use?

Yes. BJ’s unfilled sandbags are made from UV-resistant woven polypropylene and are built for prolonged outdoor use. They hold up through Texas heat, heavy rain, and extended field conditions. Inspect bags periodically for wear after extreme weather events.

6. Do you offer bulk ordering options?

Yes. BJ’s Sand Bagger offers unfilled sandbags by the pallet or full truckload for large-scale projects. Same-day pickup is available at our Lubbock and Pasadena, TX yards. Call (806) 243-1987 for bulk pricing and delivery options across Texas and neighboring states.
